FTP Access

When transferring large files, using an FTP server is a good alternative to e-mail or physically transporting the digital files on a disc or USB drive.  At JP Harvey, we offer access to upload and download files via FTP for your convenience.

Should you still have trouble accessing the server after reading this page, feel free to contact us at admin@jphes.com for further assistance.

Accessing the Server

There are many ways to access an FTP server.  You can use an FTP Client, Use an Internet Browser and even in some cases use your desktop file browser.  However, all methods require the same three pieces of information to access the server:

1) The Server/Host

2) A User/Login ID

3) A Password.

For JP Harvey, our server/host is: ftp.jphes.com

Your username and password will be unique and will be distributed by someone on our technical team.

Note: FTP usernames at JP Harvey will always end in ‘@jphes.com’ – for example: user@jphes.com.

FTP Clients

There are many free FTP programs available to download to your computer that all work in a similar manner depending on your preferences.  Here are just a few options:

FireZilla – A cross-platform free FTP client. This will work with just about any operating system.

FireFTP – FireFTP is a plug-in for the Firefox Browser. It lets you access ftp servers and files directly from your internet browser. It’s very easy to use and is highly recommended.

Fire FTP Tutorial

JP Harvey recommends the use of the FireFTP Plug-in to be used with the Firefox Internet Browser. As such, here is a short tutorial in using the program to upload and access files on our server.

Should you chose to use another client, the steps are very similar as long as you have a server/host, user name and password.

1. Click the FireFTP icon in the toolbar. This will create a new tab with the FTP client.

Click the FireFTP Icon

2. From the main window, there should be a drop-down menu in the upper left corner.  If you’ve used FireFTP before, the default option will be the last server you visited.  However, since we’re connecting to a new server, select “Create an Account.”  This will bring up the Account Manager where we’ll fill in our information.

Create an Account

3. Now that we’re in the account manager, let’s fill in that information!

Account Name: This is where FireFTP saves all your information  and will be available from the drop-down list once you click ‘ok’.

Host: This is the server – fill in “ftp.jphes.com”

Login: Your user name.  Don’t forget the “@jphes.com” at the end or the server will reject your login.

Password: Your password.

Once all the information is filled in – click “okay” to exit the window.

4. Now, go to the drop down menu and select the account name you filled in just a moment ago.  Once it’s selected, click ‘Connect’ to login to the JPHES FTP server.

If your information changes, you can also come back here and click ‘Edit’ to change information in the Account Manager.

5. Now that you’ve logged into the server you should see the files that are already uploaded to the right. If there are no files, it will be empty. Files that are stored on your computer are on the left.

6. From here, you have various methods of uploading the files. You can either select them in the browser on the left hand side and press the green arrow to upload them – or you can click and drag the file over to the other window.

Dragging from your explorer window on the computer to the FireFTP client in the browser will also work. It’s all a matter of personal preference.

7. FireFTP also gives you access to multiple other functions. By right clicking, you can bring up a menu to access these features.

The most important on this list is the “Create Directory” command. This allows you to create a new folder if needed for files.

Create Directory

After selecting Create Directory, you only need to name the folder and hit ‘enter.’  You can now drag files into the folder or double click it to see inside.

Named Folder

You can also drag an entire folder into the window to create the directory.  Either method works equally as well.

Explorer Window Tutorial

If you’re using Windows, it’s also possible to access the ftp server directly from your Explorer Browser.

1. Right click on ‘Start’ and ‘Explore all users’ or open a folder.

Explore All Users

2. When the Explorer window opens, go to the address bar and type in ftp://ftp.jphes.com.  Hit ‘Enter’ on your keyboard to go to the server.

Type in the Server Address

3. If instead of a dialogue box asking for your user name and password, this warning dialogue pops up – this is okay! Just click ‘okay’ and continue on to the next step.  Do not click back or leave the window.

Warning Dialogue

4. Since our login dialogue box didn’t pop up, we’ll go to it manually. Go to ‘File’ and then select ‘Login As…” from the menu.

5. And now we can fill in our user name and password needed to login to the server. Don’t forget the ‘@jphes.com’ at the end of your username when you enter your information.

6. Now you should be connected to the server. The window will behave like any other explorer window you’re used to.  Copy, paste, drag and rearrange files as necessary from and to this window.
